Strap yourselves in (again), Mercury is in retrograde (again). We’ve only just recovered from the last time Mercury took a step backwards in the sky, right?

What is it & why does everybody fear it so much?

Perhaps, fear isn’t the correct word. Loathe? Dread? Despise?

Mercury Retrograde happens when the planet Mercury (usually our fastest moving planet), slows down in the sky, making it appear to be travelling backwards. It isn’t actually moving backwards & it hasn’t actually stopped moving, it’s simply an orbital point of difference relative to the Earth & how they both (Earth & Mercury) move around the Sun.

Mercury, named after the Roman messenger god, is the planet of communication, travel, rational thinking, intellect, mentality, trickery, luck & technology & rules of affects these areas with its movements across the sky.

Being the fastest moving planet in our solar system, taking only 88 days to orbit the Sun, you can think of Mercury’s speed in terms of the areas it rules.

• Communication - Speaking, relaying information, we do it quickly, it’s received instantly
• Rational thinking, intellect, mentality – Sharp mind, quick thinking
• Luck – Happens to us quickly, instantly, out of the blue
• Trickery – Same, it happens to us quickly, instantly, out of the blue
• Technology – Adds efficiency to our lives, we get things done more quickly, messages & communication relayed via technology, boom, instant messaging

So, when Mercury does it’s slow-dance in the sky four times a year… Everything. Slows. Right. Down.

And it looks. Like. Everything. Has Stopped.
And nothing is working. As well. As it used. To.
And. Mental. Clarity. Evades. Us.
Our. Thoughts. Become. Cloudy.
Our. Communication. Is. Affected.
Technology. Does. Funny. Things.
Messages. Are. Not. Received.
Emails. Get. Lost.
Miscommunication is commonplace.
Bickering. Occurs.
Because. Miscommunication. Occurs.
The. Internet. Is. Down.
You. Drop. Your. Phone.
It. Won’t. Turn. On.
Flights. Are. Delayed.
Web. Check-in. Didn’t. Work.
Stress. Is. Heightened.
You. Take. It. Out. On Loved. Ones.
They. Take. It. Out. On. You.
More. Miscommunication. Occurs.
You. Are. Exhausted.
You. Are. Depressed.
You. Need. A. Break.
You. Have. A. Sudden. Impulse. To. Run. Away.
An. Overwhelming. Urge. To. Run. Away.
Nothing. Goes. Right. Anymore.
And. You. Start. Yearning. For. The. Past.
When. Will. This. End.
Wait. Why. Is. Your Ex. Texting. You?
Past mistakes make a return...

Welcome to Mercury Retrograde. It won’t last forever. It’s a 3-week ordeal while the planet SLOWS down for a minute. SLOWING down all that it rules.

Well, actually, it’s technically a 5-week ordeal:

• Mercury Retroshadow period -1 week prior, you can start to feel the effects
• Mercury Retrograde - 3 week duration. Ouch, hits like a tonne of depressing bricks. Everything goes wrong, Exes pop up out of the woodwork. Yearning for the past.
• Mercury Retroshade - 1 week following, we’re all existentially depressed, over it, still feeling the effects but the fog is lifting

So, here we are at the beginning of Mercury Retrograde, so what now?
What do we do? How to we survive? Do we respond when our ex messages us?

Well, what you should do is:

• NOTHING. Please do nothing, because whatever life-changing decisions you make right now, you WILL ALWAYS regret later, once the planet of your intellect (your thinking brain) starts moving forward again
• Try NOT to sign any contracts right now because the planet of trickery has stopped & is lurking in the shadows. If you do HAVE to sign a contract or make a life altering decision, READ THE FINEPRINT CAREFULLY. Don’t panic if you HAVE to sign a contract. Try to delay it IF you can.
  If you can't, read the fineprint.
• Think. Read. Review. Before doing anything
• Probably DON’T dye your hair blue right now & don't cut bangs. Wait 3-5 weeks. Then see how you feel about the idea
• Be PATIENT with each other, be open to miscommunications & have SELF-AWARENESS of your own mis-COMMUNICATIONS. Mis-HEARING. Mis-UNDERSTANDING
• Stop bickering
• SLOW DOWN. To avoid mishaps. Phone drops. Screen breaks. Mercury is slowing down. You should too.
• Have a back-up plan for when the internet drops out for half the day
• Leave the house SOONER than you intended because you’ll LIKELY expect delays SOMEWHERE. Travel is slowed, everywhere
• Don’t break up with your spouse right now. Wait 3 weeks. Please
• Jot down the dates of Mercury Retrograde periods & be aware simply that Mercury is doing it’s thing in the sky.

It’s a zillion times easier to pass through the existential depression that seems to overcome everybody at this time & the yearning for the past that seems to be suffocating. If you KNOW it’s happening, then you KNOW it’ll pass.
It’s not you, it’s everyone. And it’ll lift like a dense smog once Mercury starts moving again.

Oh & your ex (or exes) might pop up to say “Hi" Or “Hey” or "WYD".

It’s up to you whether you respond.

Sometimes it’s the universe giving you guys the chance to try again & rekindle something beautiful.
But usually, it’s the universe checking to see if you're still stupid.
