'Bread Madness' - The Link Between Schizophrenia & Wheat Consumption

Home/Store/Articles/'Bread Madness' - The Link Between Schizophrenia & Wheat Consumption

Yes, Bread Madness is actually a thing.

Bread Madness is a term coined half a century ago when the correlation between wheat consumption & schizophrenia was first observed.

During World War II, when wheat was in short supply, hospital admission for schizophrenia dropped in direct proportion to reduced wheat consumption.

In nations where wheat consumption was relatively low to begin with, an increase in wheat consumption saw a dramatic increase in hospitalizations for schizophrenia.

This is a little known fact, sadly, because it may potentially pose such a simple fix for many of those suffering with schizophrenia. It could be the lifeline for families caring for those suffering from schizophrenia.

If we approach this logically (my very logical brain at work), if you knew somebody who was suffering from schizophrenia, this person was subject to lifelong disability & was a continuous risk of harm to themselves or others. This person may require constant care & may be unable to function without prescription medication, which only mildly mitigates their symptoms.

If you found out that this information existed for 50+ years & had not been made widely available to the general population nor followed up in any particular forum to determine whether it should or could become a mainstream treatment for the prevention of schizophrenic episodes including those resulting in death, such as murder, suicide, infanticide etc...

How would you feel?

Personally, I would feel absolutely let down by the powers that determine what information is available to each of us when deciding on treatment for disease.

I might feel that many have been let down & many will have succumbed to illness unnecessarily.
I would wish for everybody to be made aware that there may exist (if even the slightest possibility, whilst doing no harm) of improving the quality of life of an individual through a very basic dietary adjustment of eliminating wheat from their diet.

Even if just for a period of time. Even if it's just to see if it may make a difference.
And if it doesn't, so be it. There is no harm in trying.

The harm would be in not trying.
And the harm has been in not knowing, or not being made aware.
